I am deeply saddened at the passing of Henry LeTang.
For those not familiar with him, you can find out more about his life and accomplishments here. Henry LeTang worked with just about all of the great tap dancers and was highly respected and loved by all. He was teacher to Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, and many, many others. Among his many other accomplishments, Henry created much of the choreography for the movie “Tap” (Released in 1989). I saw this movie when I was 12 years old and was immediately fascinated by the dancing. I never forgot the famous “challenge” scene where many of the Masters from the Golden Age of tap reappeared and showcased their phenomenal dance abilities. More than that, they showcased their great spirit and love for tap dancing! They made it look so easy. This movie was filled with great dancing. Every dancer needs to see it!
I can remember running and grabbing a pair of “dress shoes” and trying to imitate what I saw. After all, it looked so easy when they did it on the movie. It was then that I was able to appreciate just how amazing those dancers were. If not for Henry LeTang and that movie, I probably would have never put on a pair of tap shoes…
Thank you Mr. LeTang. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, your friends, your students, and the entire tap community.
