I spent a few days in New York this week where I performed at the Sphatika launch party in the Rainbow Room on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Center. It was an incredible experience. In this brief two-part post series, I will recount some of the tap-related highlights of my trip.

On day one, I met up with two very important contributors to this blog. Hillary Marie-Michael & Maurice, AKA SimmySlydeJr (YouTube). We met up at the Virgin Music Store in Times Square and headed over to a local Sbarro (I swear that there are 5 million in NY) to eat and talk tap. What started as a brief lunch stretched into over three hours discussing tap’s past, present, and future.

It was a very rich experience. I rarely get to spend time with many other tap dancers here in Atlanta, especially dancers who are as passionate about the art form as I am. In fact, it reminded me how important this kind of “quality” time is.

In the book of Hebrews in the Bible, believers are instructed:

“…forsake not the gathering of yourselves together…”

My time with these dancers got me to thinking that this verse may also hold a truth for dancers, artists, families, or anyone other groups sharing a connection to something larger than themselves. I encourage you to work to find ways to connect tap dancers in your community with one another.

Meetup.com can assist you with this.

I am now aware that I could be doing even more to develop a community of tap dancers in Atlanta so over the next few weeks, I will be announcing some new events to my network here.

What about you? What ideas do you have for connecting tap dancers locally? Please share your them in the comments section below.

I am visiting New York between the 5th and 12th August and would like to do some tap dancing whilst there. I teach tap in the UK. Can you advise me of any suitable classes?
    Thanks.
