I had the good fortune to attend the performance of “Thunder†on August 18. Although I have admired the rhythm, athleticism and energy that gushed from performances of men like the late Gregory Hines, I did not grasp the scope of communication and depth that this dance style could convey.
Mr. Tate’s interaction especially with the narrator (a remarkable Cezar Williams) and his girlfriend (Cindy Ball) stuns us with the non-verbal power of Tap to “speak” so eloquently. Mr. Tate’s body motion, face and presence tell us far more powerfully than even the most articulate dialogue what is in his mind and soul.
Thunder is a very special and entertaining work that is also enriched by his original guitar pieces and the captivating duets with Christa Victoria who makes his late mother almost a tangible presence on the stage. This is a highly recommended performance –a “must-see.”
