Jason Samuels-Smith also responded to my question about the importance of improvisation in tap dance. You may have seen him recently when he was featured tap dancing on the “reality” show, “So You Think You Can Dance!”
He is also an organizer of the L.A. Tap Festival which is being held all this week in Los Angeles.
Here is his response to the question. “Is Improvisation Important in Tap Dancing?”
“Improvisation is extremely important in the spectrum of being able to convey a thought or a particular message, being able to adjust to any circumstances whether that be a new band or a tempo which you’re unfamiliar, or just being able to take part in a general jam session or performance.
Improvisation is the freedom to speak your mind within the vocabulary of Tap Dance.”
