The work that Savion Glover and “Bare Sounds” performed on “Dancing With the Stars” last Wednesday honored the life and work of Gregory Hines. Most tap dancers immediately recognized Savion’s inclusion of Gregory Hines’ famous sidewalk combination from the movie “Tap“.
Check out this website if you would like to learn some of the styles of dance featured on the show.
Well here is the Gregory Hines performance that may have directly inspired Savion’s choice of music and even some of his steps.
You can now watch them both below.
Do you see the similarities? I’d love to hear what you think!

yow, this was cool! i appreciate hines’s sense of timing a lot. he’s very musical. in music (and tap is music, so this must apply, according to my logic…) the notes you don’t play are as important as the notes you play. that’s what i love about hines, he gives space and conversates. senor glover gives much less space to my ears, he’s great – no debate, and I can clearly see the comparison you refer to T., but what stands out most to me is he is like a “wall of sound” and doesn’t use space like Hines at all.

See Maria! That’s why I love having musicians on my blog. You’re right…Savion is more of a “Funk” Tap Dancer. In most performances he is likely to use a lot of straight rhythms delivered at blinding speed whereas Greg had mastered the are of saying enough…and no more. Kind of like the Thelonious Monk of tap dancing.
Amanda,
Thanks for the link! Do you know where I can view a video clip of Raw Metal? The one on the website is not up yet.
