Alfred Desio, creator of “Tap-tronics” died of cancer on February 14, 2007. Many of you may have seen “Tap-tronics” featured in the movie Tap when Max Washington’s (played by Gregory Hines) taps were connected to a synthesizer allowing him to create different sound effects with his shoes. Mr. Desio was a true tap innovator.
Here is an article announcing his passing as well as details of his life’s work. Special thanks to Tapdance.info for getting the word out!
Here are links to more sites about Mr. Desio as well as his “Zapped Taps”:

Reviews of Alfred Desio’s work
What I can’t figure out is why Alfred Desio’s invention is not more widely used in performances. Does anyone have any idea? Post your thoughts…I’d love to hear them!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot actually. I’ve been contemplating rigging up a looping pedal or a wah wah pedal, even. Unfortunately, these days my tapping skills are lagging behind my engineering skills.

EJ,
I have been contemplating the same. I even went to a sound store to discuss how that should be set up. Send me an email sometime…your engineering skills would be a big plus in helping me figure this out!

In reply to the responses, a group met last summer (we called it the Tap-Tronics Summit) to get the equipment working and see if we could market Alfred’s invention so more could make use of it. For more about that see the archived enewsletters on our website LAChoreographersAndDancers.org. Alfred was my husband and co-founder of our company, and there are a number of new videos on the site and on youtube.com/AlfredDesio.
